What Are Intacs?
Intacs® Corneal Implants are an ophthalmic medical device designed for the reduction or elimination of myopia and astigmatism in patients with keratoconus so that their functional vision may be restored and the need for a corneal transplant procedure can potentially be deferred.
Intacs are micro-thin corneal implants that can be inserted during an outpatient procedure. Originally designed to treat mild nearsightedness, Intacs can now also be an effective treatment option for patients with keratoconus, a degeneration of the structure of the cornea. Intacs corneal implants gently reshape the curvature of your cornea from within, enhancing the natural shape of your eye to correct mild nearsightedness. Unlike laser surgery, no corneal tissue is removed from the central optical zone of your cornea—the portion critical to your sight.
Intacs for Keratoconus
Keratoconus is a progressive eye disease, which causes a thinning of the cornea, the clear front surface of the eye. As the disease progresses, the quality of one’s vision deteriorates and contact lenses or glasses no longer become a satisfactory solution for most people. For many, an invasive corneal transplant was the only option – until now! Intacs prescription inserts are an exciting new treatment option that falls between contact lenses and a full corneal transplant that may be the best possible option to stabilize the cornea and improve vision.
Intacs prescription inserts are approved by the FDA for Keratoconus under a Humanitarian Device Exemption (HDE). For more information on Intacs® for Keratoconus, please visit www.intacsforkeratoconus.com
